KIDS' SUMMER FUN - ELEMENTARY

 
FANTASTIC VOYAGES  (Entering Gr. K-1): Take fantastic voyages into the darkness of outer space, the layers of the rain forest, the depths of the ocean, and dive into Earth Week projects where you’ll discover the importance of our mother earth and how you can take care of her. Be actively involved in fun-filled hands-on learning, acting, scientific experiments and observation, crafts, engaging stories, and wonderful center-based learning. Bring lunch. DYNAMIC DINOS (Entering Grades K-1): Do you dream about the days of the dinosaurs and wish they still roamed the Earth?  Become a paleontologist! Dig for dinosaur bones and find clues about these magnificent reptiles that once lived on our planet.  We’ll read a variety of non-fiction and fiction stories, create models, diagrams, puppets, pictures, murals and timelines, and dramatize some mini-dinosaur plays.  Be ready for a exciting learning experience as we explore the days of the dinosaurs!  Bring lunch. A WORLD OF FAIRY TALES  (Entering Gr. K-2): Welcome to the world of fairy tales where your princess or prince will explore 3-5 different tales each week.  Our focus is on arts and crafts, imaginative play, games, puzzles and FUN!  There are new activities each session. You may be designing a castle, building a gingerbread house,  planting a bean sprout, creating a magic wand and much more!  Bring lunch. (Instructors, Judy Bachman and Kristin Lukovits)

VAMOS … (Entering Gr. 2-4):  Fun is first on our travel itinerary as we learn about three beautifully distinct cultures.  Vamos a Mexico, Vamos a America Sur, and Vamos a Espana will be an adventure of language, food, people, customs, and animals.  We will commemorate the end of our journey with an authentic celebration from the land of our study.  Join us on a trip around the world, or just for one session.  *Class taught by Spanish teachers who work at the elementary level.   Bring a snack. SCIENCE DISCOVERIES (Entering Gr. 1-3):  Be a scientist!  Discover the forces of magnets.  Experiment with sound and light waves.  Have fun with chemistry while making silly putty and blowing up a balloon with baking soda and vinegar.  Launch bottle rockets and race balloons to understand motion.  Become “shocked” by fun static electricity experiments.  Look through microscopes.  Watch crystals grow.  Learn how germs spread and how to uncover the age of trees.  Bring a snack. DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! (Boys and girls entering Gr. 1-3): Learn Hip-Hop, the Hottest Dance Craze, Jazz, Modern, Tap Rhythms, Classical and Creative Dance in a unique fun program. FOREST FORENSICS (Entering Gr. 1-3):  Be a wildlife detective as we investigate clues inside and outdoors searching for signs of wildlife such as tracks, tunnels, nests and more!  Let’s dissect owl pellets to find out what they ate and put the skeletons of their prey back together!  We’ll enjoy identifying outdoor sights and sounds as we go on fieldtrips to nearby forests and parks to search for signs of wildlife.  We’ll read an ecological mystery and so much more!  Put on your detective caps and join us for the adventure!  Bring lunch.  (Instructor, Keri Paradis)

MYSTERY MADNESS AND MORE! (Entering Gr. 1-4): Do you like solving mysteries?  Are you curious about fingerprints, following clues, and detective work?  We have a fun-filled class with hands-on experiments, wonderful mystery stories, creative writing time, play-acting, games and field trips.  Bring snack and lunch. JUNIOR GENIE’S MAGIC CLUB (Entering Gr. 1-4): Learn the secrets of the professional magician and experience the wonder of magic! In this critically acclaimed program, you’ll learn presentation skills, leadership skills, and speaking skills. You will build self confidence and poise, improve body coordination and communication skills, and learn creative planning and stage presence. You will receive magic tricks to take home with you! CHESS (Entering Gr. 1-5): Learn to play chess in one week! Chess is a game you can enjoy as friendly entertainment with your family and also as a competitive sport.  It also helps improve your mind! The course is also open to players who know the moves but want to learn more about the strategies of the game –to win more! (Instructor, Mike Zadorozny)

C.L.A.M.S. (Children Learning About Marine Science) (Entering Gr. 2-4): Don’t be a beach bum this summer . . . be a beach C.L.A.M.! Suit up, grab your net, and let’s get wet exploring sea life along Long Island Sound. Our study will include marine science experiments, arts and craftss, group sports, and a field trip to the Norwalk Maritime Center. Bring snack and lunch. FUN WITH FASHION (Entering Gr. 2-5): Explore contemporary fashions and also learn about the styles of historical periods.  Design your own line of clothes! Create jewelry to bring home and share with friends.  There is something for every type of creative talent in this cultural and highly artistic course.  Best of all, you get to be a star in an end of course “Celebration Fashion Show” for friends and guests. AEROSPACE EXPLORERS (Entering Gr. 2-5): Become a summer school astronaut! You will build a classroom-sized space bubble, create and launch rockets, construct “constellation finders.” You’ll discover the secrets of flight by making planes,  helicopters, and parachutes. Enjoy space related literature, properly record scientific findings, and write space stories. “Space Camp” is a summer of fun, learning, and excitement.  All materials are provided, as well as a membership in the Young Astronauts Program. AMAZING OUTDOOR ADVENTURES (Entering Gr. 2-3): Do you adore nature and everything that lives and grows outdoors?  Do you like hiking, exploring in fresh air, making great discoveries, sketching and drawing?  Want to see and learn about animals in their natural environment?  Become an Amazing Outdoor Adventurer!  We’ll explore all kinds of ways we look upon and use our natural environment. Our program includes daily exercise, bird, tree and wildflower identification, camping skills, story telling and writing, photography and art as we enjoy and respect our beautiful, natural surroundings. Trips may include Devil’s Den, Earthplace and Burying Hill Beach. Wear good shoes to stomp around in. Bring a healthy lunch. (Instructor, Brianne Shea)  

THE WORLD OF HARRY POTTER (Entering Gr. 3-5):  Have you been captivated by the most famous wizard and his best friends over the past few years?  Do you wonder what happened in the last book of the series? If so, then this is the summer class for you!  Join fellow Harry Potter fans to discuss your favorite characters, create a magical creature, get sorted into your house, compare the books to the movies and debate the good and evil within Professor Snape. Get on the Express and we’ll see you at Hogwarts. Sign up today (or send an owl). . . this class will fill up quickly. Don’t be a Muggle! AWESOME ADVENTURES DAY CAMP (Ages 8-15): The Mountain Workshop and Westport Continuing Education present these fantastic outdoor adventure experiences. The programs provide an opportunity for a small group of 13 participants and two adult leaders to spend 5 days exploring and learning in a fun-loving, cooperative atmosphere. Each day has a different outdoor adventure, such as hiking, caving, canoeing, rock climbing, rappelling, and kayaking, with locations from 15-90 minutes of Westport. Bike camps are also offered. Round trip transportation is provided from Bedford Middle School. Morning pick up at 8:00, return at 4:00. ALL THE RIGHT MOVES (Entering Gr. 5-8):  Express yourself through the art of dance.  We’ll explore different styles of dance including tap, jazz, ballroom, Latin, lyrical and contemporary dances of today.  Learn how to prepare your body for dance performances using yoga exercises.  Whether you are a beginner or experienced dancer, you will develop your individual style and presence.  (Instructor, Sandy Adamczyk)

AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTERS COURSE (Age 11 and up):
Earn Red Cross Babysitters Certification while learning the knowledge and skills associated with leadership, safety, age-appropriate safe play, basic care, first aid, and professionalism.  Babysitters will learn how to prevent accidents and decide appropriate steps in response to emergency.  (Instructor, Don Savage)
