DYNAMIC DINOS (Entering Grades K-1): Do you dream about the days of the dinosaurs and wish they still roamed the Earth?  Become a paleontologist! Dig for dinosaur bones and find clues about these magnificent reptiles that once lived on our planet.  We’ll read a variety of non-fiction and fiction stories, create models, diagrams, puppets, pictures, murals and timelines, and dramatize some mini-dinosaur plays.  Be ready for a exciting learning experience as we explore the days of the dinosaurs!  Bring lunch. SCIENCE DISCOVERIES (Entering Gr. 1-3):  Be a scientist!  Discover the forces of magnets.  Experiment with sound and light waves.  Have fun with chemistry while making silly putty and blowing up a balloon with baking soda and vinegar.  Launch bottle rockets and race balloons to understand motion.  Become “shocked” by fun static electricity experiments.  Look through microscopes.  Watch crystals grow.  Learn how germs spread and how to uncover the age of trees.  Bring a snack. TIME TRAVELERS SUMMER PROGRAM (Ages 5-8, 9-13)
co-sponsored with the Westport Historical Society

The Explorers (ages 5-8) will participate in a wide variety of activities including arts and crafts, storytelling, drama, history-based scavenger hunts and "eye spy" games, making ice cream, baking with a chef, playing with bubble wands, pinwheels, paper airplanes and balloons, and a field trip each week.  A hands-on, by-kids-for-kids exhibit will be created by the participants.   

The New Double-Digits (ages 9-13) will have the opportunity to work with a local artist and photographer, visit a local art gallery, participate in drama activities, make an electrical circuit board utilizing historic facts, ramble through Downtown Westport on our new Walking Tour, enjoy scavenger hunts and mystery games and a day kayaking on the river.   

All participants will contribute to the creation of the 2008 Westport Historical Society Community Quilt.  Bring a bag lunch (pizza lunch will be provided one day); snacks and materials provided.

C.L.A.M.S. (Children Learning About Marine Science) (Entering Gr. 2-4): Don’t be a beach bum this summer . . . be a beach C.L.A.M.! AEROSPACE EXPLORERS (Entering Gr. 2-5): Become a summer school astronaut! You will build a classroom-sized space bubble, create and launch rockets, construct “constellation finders.” You’ll discover the secrets of flight by making planes,  helicopters, and parachutes. Enjoy space related literature, properly record scientific findings, and write space stories. “Space Camp” is a summer of fun, learning, and excitement.  All materials are provided, as well as a membership in the Young Astronauts Program. Our program includes daily exercise, bird, tree and wildflower identification, camping skills, story telling and writing, photography and art as we enjoy and respect our beautiful, natural surroundings. AWESOME ADVENTURES DAY CAMP (Ages 8-15): The Mountain Workshop and Westport Continuing Education present these fantastic outdoor adventure experiences. The programs provide an opportunity for a small group of 13 participants and two adult leaders to spend 5 days exploring and learning in a fun-loving, cooperative atmosphere. Each day has a different outdoor adventure, such as hiking, caving, canoeing, rock climbing, rappelling, and kayaking, with locations from 15-90 minutes of Westport. Bike camps are also offered. Round trip transportation is provided from Bedford Middle School. Morning pick up at 8:00, return at 4:00. ALL THE RIGHT MOVES (Entering Gr. 5-8):  Express yourself through the art of dance.  We’ll explore different styles of dance including tap, jazz, ballroom, Latin, lyrical and contemporary dances of today.  Learn how to prepare your body for dance performances using yoga exercises.  Whether you are a beginner or experienced dancer, you will develop your individual style and presence.  (Instructor, Sandy Adamczyk)
