  • To register for any of the classes through our secure registration system, please click on the course number or description (in bright blue) and you will be taken to a page which will allow you to register through a secure server for that specific course.

  • If you are registering more than one person, you will be required to do them separately. 
  • For your convenience, a profile will be created on each student which will expedite future registrations. 
  • Registrations can be placed over the phone.  Please note that registration fees are waived for online registrations.

Technology/Computers
Our computer instructors are dedicated to providing intensive, hands-on computer instruction in an informal setting, with each student working at modern individual PC’s computers. Classes limited to 10 to 12 students.

MICROSOFT OFFICE MASTERY PROGRAM ~ This program is perfect for the small business executive, administrative assistant, aspiring entrepreneur, student, or parent who wants to catch up in the technology boom. The course is designed in three separate modules to develop proficiency using the most popular Microsoft Office Components (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) plus Windows. The course is built around using applications such as mass mailings, writing reports, creating labels, creating graphs, building data bases, utilizing email, financial reporting, organizing appointments and calendars, preparing presentations, and more. SPECIAL ONE-DAY WORKSHOPS!

INTRODUCTION TO MS OFFICE ~ one day workshop! Are you about to re-enter the office or want to brush up on your skills? This one day workshop is for you! In Windows, learn about multiple windows, resizing them, and organizing your work with folders. In Word, learn the basics of creating, editing, and printing documents. Topics include cut, copy, paste, margins, formatting with font and type size, mouse and shortcut keys, and spell-check. In Excel, create spreadsheets for business and home use and learn how to use basic arithmetic functions  in a spreadsheet. In PowerPoint, create a mini-slide show through the use of special graphics and other features. Training materials and disks are included. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided. WEB PAGE DESIGN Learn the basic components of web site design: planning the site, creating links within your site and to other locations, and creating forms to enable clients to contact you.  We will create JPG and GIF graphics in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements which hasten downloads on your website.  In addition we will talk about getting your site listed in Google.  Students need a basic knowledge of the PC and Microsoft programs such as Word or Excel. TECHNOLOGY FOR EDUCATORS  – one day workshop!  As a teacher or administrator, you’re well trained in your area of expertise be it languages, humanities, or social sciences and have a basic understanding of the computer, be it writing text in Word, using the Internet for some research but you desire to use the computer more effectively.  In this class you will learn how to use some special tips in Word to help you write course outlines, quizzes, and other documents that students will find easy to read.  In Excel, you’ll learn how to do a grade/attendance book that will have simple formulas to help you accurately grade those myriad of assignments.  With PowerPoint, you will get a few pointers on how to make an effective presentation either to your class or the PTA.   Training materials and files are included.  If you wish to bring home files, please bring a flash drive (memory stick) to class.  Lunch and light refreshments will be provided.  Prerequisite: familiarity with the keyboard, mouse and Word basics.  (Instructor, Alan Weaver)

GOOGLE SEARCHING ~ About 99% of the world is familiar with this powerful search engine. However, there are many techniques to improve your research. Getting 85,000 web pages on a single topic can be overwhelming. Learn techniques to target the required information. PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS ~ For those who are either photography novices or on a limited budget, the Elements program, with its many powerful features, is the ideal choice for you. You can work with pictures from your digital camera or your old photos. This program is very useful if you are designing a personal website or wish to work with graphics or photos.  This powerful program will show you many basics to improve photos: adjusting color, removing red eye, cropping, working with layers, and special effects. We will cover printing methods, types of papers, and the best printer to own. The images will take up considerable memory, so you may wish to bring a large storage device (flash card with a USB port) to store your work. You need to be able to work with a mouse. MEDITATION AND THE SECRET ~ This class offers a way to integrate and work with traditional meditation and the law of attraction as presented in the movie “The Secret”.  Learn approaches to mental well being for the individual and for the whole society to better deal with today’s complex and fast paced world. Two powerful tools are available, both of which are timeless and effective. The course is designed to shed light on how to use and understand these two approaches.  The class will include lecture, discussion, meditation, and exercises. Several film clips will also be shown.  For people who have taken the instructor’s other courses, this will be a continuation of the work. He has over 30 years experience with meditation techniques and self-help approaches and has worked for 15 years as a therapist with individuals, couples, families and groups. ASTRONOMY ~ Journey through our Solar System to the edge of the known Universe.  Rediscover the constellations and the stories behind their names.  Tour the planets with highlights from the space probes and landers of the last two decades.  Track results from the Hubble Space Telescope to explore the life and death of stars, the formation of galaxies, and the fate of the Universe.  Explore the growing list of extra-solar planets and the possibility of life outside of our Solar System.  At least one evening will be spent using the telescopes at the Westport Rolnick Observatory.  (Instructor, Dr. Nicholas Morgan)

Dr. Nicholas Morgan was a professional astronomer before joining the science faculty at Staples High School in 2007.  After earning his Ph.D. from MIT, he worked as an astrophysicist at the Yale Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics and The Ohio State University Astronomy Department.  His research focused on the matter density and expansion rate of the Universe, and on identifying rare optical mirages in deep space (known as lensed quasars).  He currently teaches in the Staples Physics Department and Authentic Science Research program, and manages the school's research telescopes at the Rolnick Observatory.

GOING TO THE DOGS – DOG OBEDIENCE ~ (for dogs at least 4 months old) ~ Designed to teach the owner how to train his/her dog to be a well-mannered and obedient pet. Topics: understanding your dog and communicating effectively; basic obedience commands- sit, down, stay, stand, come, and leash walking; behavior modification- digging, jumping, chewing, barking, etc. Dogs must have a collar and a 6 foot leash.
